Rohace – Via Ferrata (difficult hike)
One of our favourite difficult hikes in the “Via Ferrata”-style in the Western Tatras is at the “Roháče” (often written Rohace) ridge. The hike is difficult and fairly long, but not a ferrata in the Italian‑style sense.
The Rohace trail is a long, highly exposed, and technically demanding mountain trail in the Western Tatras (Slovakia), along the ridge above the Polish border. It combines serious hiking with natural rock sections secured by chains at the hardest parts, so many users treat it like a “via ferrata–style” route, even though it is an official Tatra trail (marked, but not a dedicated sport‑ferrata).

Where and what it is
- Roháče runs along a ridge around 2000 m above sea level in the Western Tatras, starting near Volovec and passing summits such as Ostrý Roháč (2088 m), Plačlivé (2125 m), Hrubá kopa (2166 m), Baníkov (2178 m), and Salatín (2048 m).
- The terrain on the central ridgeline is steep, rocky, and in the steepest parts also exposed, with significant exposure and frequent use of chains and fixed protection similar to a via‑ferrata, but it is classified as a demanding hiking trail rather than a commercial ferrata.

Difficulty and style
- The route is considered long and strenuous (roughly half‑day to full‑day out‑and‑back), with sections of UIAA class 1/2 scrambles or harder, requiring sure‑footedness, good head for heights, and experience with alpine terrain.
- Many hikers wear via‑ferrata lanyards or at least a climbing‑style harness for safety, even though the route is not formally managed as a ferrata; loose rock and weather‑related conditions (snow, ice) can quickly push it beyond “normal” hiking.
- Experienced hikers and climbers usually go without additional equipment.

Approach, logistics
- Typical access is from the Slovak side (e.g., near Ťatliakova chata), with several kilometers of forest road or easy trail before reaching the real ridge.
- The trailhead at the ski resorts Rohace-Spalena is a one hour scenic drive from our house in Zubrzyca Gorna
